Integrated Information Literacy and Technology Benchmark Project

Lesson:
We have found lots of interesting information about Allen Say from the DPS Author's Site. Often authors will write about the same themes or topics. They may use similar language or similar characters. They may even structure the books the same (using cartoon ballons, writing around an illustration, beginning a story with a funny question, etc.) Today we will discuss what we know about Allen Say and how it affects his writing. We will also predict what "How My Parents Learned to Eat" may be about. They I will read the book to you.

 

Work Period:

Presentation of facts children found about Allen Say.

Discussion of how these facts may affect his writing.

Predicting what the book is about using the information we know.

Read aloud by teacher of "How My Parents Learned to Eat".

Discussion of book.

 

Assessment:

Advanced - Child gives insightful response in group discussion.

Proficient - Child offers relevant opinion or observation.

Partially Proficient - Child repeats another child's idea using other words.

Unsatisfactory - Child does not participate or is off task.

 

Modifications/Extensions:
  • Use another Allen Say book.
  • Chart Allen Say's writing techniques.
  • Character development of a main character on a timeline.
  • Act out scene from the story.
  • Beginning - middle - end chart of story.
