Sample Information Literacy and Technology Grant Proposals
The following paragraphs represent sample ideas for ILT grant projects. They are not meant to be all-inclusive, but rather a snapshot to use in thinking about an appropriate project for your team. As you read through them, look for common threads and ideas to help make your project successful.
Digital Manipulatives | Math | Grades: 1-3
A four-member team of teachers in 1st through 3rd grades will create lessons that use “digital manipulatives” (learning tools created with a digital camera or educational software to help students translate abstract concepts into concrete objects and experiences). By making and working with digital manipulatives, students will learn number sense -- in particular, ordering numbers, identifying/ordering coins, place value, fractions, decimals, rounding and estimating, and multiplication.
Colorado or Bust | Social Studies and Literacy | Grade: 4
This collaborative project will involve the 4th grade teachers, media specialist, and computer lab teacher in a study of mining in Colorado. The classroom teacher, using our existing AlphaSmarts, will focus on the writing process during the literacy block. The media specialist will provide support in note taking, outlining of information, bibliographic constructions, and the use of DPS databases. The computer lab teacher will provide instruction on Internet research and resources and the final student-produced multi-media documents. This grant will purchase the time needed for these professionals to research, plan, and write out the lessons for this project.
Join the Graph Club! | Math and Science | Grades: 3 & 4
A four-member team will develop math and science activities that integrate ILT proficiencies with math and science content standards for grades 3 and 4. Particular activities will include: using graphing software to enhance students’ ability to manipulate data and graphical representations of data, using calculators to demonstrate meanings for whole numbers and commonly used fractions/decimals, and using a variety of tools to create science fair projects. Teachers will create the activities and assessments in monthly daylong curriculum writing sessions.
The Secret Life of Bees: Reading Buddies | Literacy | Cross Grade Teaming
Sue Monk Kidd offers a powerful portrait of a girl whose life is touched by so many issues of our student population. From the depths of poverty, abuse, racism, and death emerge hope, friendship and life lessons. Our grant will provide teacher collaborative professional development to design and implement a WebQuest, designed to strengthen
student reading and writing skills through electronic book discussions and correspondence.
Let Us In | Social Studies | Grades: 6-8
We will develop a collaborative project involving a Social Studies teacher, Librarian, and Computer Lab Instructor focused on the development of student-produced videos on the theme of US Immigration Policies. Students will work in collaborative teams to research, author, and produce their videos. ILT grant funding will be used to provide: collaborative planning time for the three teacher ILT team to design and implement the project, a digital video camera and accessories, video tapes, blank CDs, blank DVDs, and other supplies for the students’ productions.
WHODUNIT?: Biology Through CSI | Biology | Grade: 9
60 million Americans watch CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) every week. This popular show is impacting everyone from jurors to college course designers. Yet, nearly 50% of our students fail the required Ninth Grade Biology course, leaving them to repeat the same course in order to maintain graduation eligibility. Funding our grant will provide our teachers collaborative time to design a Biology course in which students will investigate crime scenes to solve mysteries applying the information and biology from their student-directed guided exploration.
